SWALSC and the six Noongar regional corporations are seeking expressions of interest for expert directors
Email Pamela Kaye, chair of the Noongar Boodja Trust Nominations Committee, for an application pack. Applications must be received by the Trustee by Sunday, 20 March 2022
Background
The South West Native Title Settlement (the Settlement) is the largest native title settlement in Australian history. The Settlement will affect an estimated 30,000 Noongar people, encompasses approximately 200,000 square kilometres in the South West, and has been valued at $1.3 billion.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the success of the Settlement. There will be six new regional corporations, with boards consisting of four member elected directors and two expert directors.
In addition, the South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council (SWALSC), which will serve as the CSC, has a current vacancy for one expert director. Accordingly, up to 13 expert director positions need to be filled.
The SWALSC position is based in Perth, as are the two positions available for the Perth-based Whadjuk Aboriginal Corporation. All other positions are based in regional locations across settlement area with travel and accommodation assistance provided.
Persons interested in submitting an expression of interest should be familiar with the key aspects of the Settlement and the proposed governance structures. Comprehensive information on the Settlement is readily available through the state government website or the SWALSC website.
Responsibilities and qualification requirements
Qualification requirements for director positions are governed by the Corporations (Aboriginal & Torres Strait islander) Act 2006, and are also covered in the rule books of each corporation. Further details are available in the job description.
Nominations will be vetted by the Nominations Committee of the Noongar Boodja Trust, which will present the names of suitable candidates to the boards of SWALSC and each regional corporation, who will undertake interviews and make the appointments.
Expert director positions are open to both Noongar and non-Noongar persons. Applicants based in the regions are strongly encouraged to apply.
Time commitment and terms
Directors must meet at least four times per year and should attend the AGM. Directors may be required to attend occasional workshops and training.
Term of appointment would be for a period of up two years (three for SWALSC) and may be renewed for a second term.
Remuneration
Once the various corporations are endorsed to be in receipt of funds through the Noongar Boodja Trust, remuneration will become payable. Travel and accommodation costs associated with attending meetings will be covered.
Closing date and appointments
Applications must be received by the Trustee by Sunday, 20 March 2022. Appointment times will vary according to the timeline for regional corporation establishment, which may extend over a period of several months.
